There's no crying in Softball!

And this year that actually held true. I was invited to come and help out with the high school girls' softball team again this year, and I'm glad I did. As mentioned before, last year's coach was a total ogre, so my experience in coaching revolved mostly around giving pep talks and hugging crying girls. The coach this year is actually a good friend of mine, and a colleague in the sped department. He taught the girls quite a bit about softball (and taught me a lot about coaching!). This was great since last year the philosophy was, if you put them out there, they'll figure out the game for themselves....no teaching required. Unfortunately, this didn't work out so well, so even our returning players didn't know much about the game. The girls kicked the season off with a tournament in which they went undefeated....this was just the ego boost they needed to get the season going. It's sad, but we only have two other teams we get to play that count toward our season record, and one of them is literally out of our league. We're like a 2A school trying to compete against a 4A school. This means we generally lose to them, but at least this year we were consistently able to beat the third team. So another second place showing, but everyone felt much better about that this year. At the end of the season, I'm so exhausted from travelling with the girls that I'm not sure whether I'll participate again the next season. We'll see. I definitely feel like I could coach after this! Maybe not a high school team by myself, but definitely for some little leaguers!
